Did you know that over 700 people will apply to the same job as you at any given time?

So how do you stand out? How do you become the candidate who gets the job offer? Of course, there are the usual suspects: a tailored resume, a standout interview, and a LinkedIn profile that screams “professional”.  But we know that there is a lot more in play. There are the steps within the steps.

Meet Pauline and Natasha.

Sisters, Career Coaches and Co-founders of My Career Angels.

They have seen it all:

Pauline and Natasha’s Why.

Straight from the career coaches’ mouths:

Our answer is simple: having spent 25 combined years on the other side of the hiring desk, working closely with employees, managers, and job seekers, we have seen it all.

We have read the resumes, interviewed the candidates, negotiated with managers, upskilled the talent, and been in the room where job offers were decided, where dismissals were laid down, and where companies have moved the goalposts time and time again.

Throughout it all, we saw the writing on the wall with each employee and candidate. We read the resumes and binned them in 10 seconds; we shook hands with the interviewees and made up our minds on first impression; we knew who was getting promoted and who was being managed out.

But what got us was seeing the changes each individual could have made to alter their fate and address any shortcomings. It was frustrating that we could not work with them to help them. It was not our job, and we were not in a position to reach out and say, “Hey, did you know if you structured your resume this way, you would have more phone calls from hiring managers?”

So, eventually, we said “enough is enough” and decided to create My Career Angels, where we put all our energy on YOUR side, the job seeker, the motivated employee with big career goals and a passion for fulfilment and purpose.

Pauline

Hi there, I am Pauline. A mother of two, a scary movie buff and a coffee lover. I also enjoy travelling (albeit I did a lot more of that before kids), and am a slight shop-a-holic.

Very early on in my career, I realised I wanted to work in Human Resources. But it was not my first job. Initially, I was employed as a Marketing and Events Planner for a telecommunications company.  I honestly did not like my work at the time. Sure, it had some fun, creative sides – I got to work on the Sydney to Hobart Race and Formula 1 in Melbourne, but most days were long, spent sitting on my own, coming up with and writing various boring pitches to management that honestly went nowhere. I did not feel fulfilled and lacked purpose in my day-to-day work. In the end, I sat there playing solitaire on my computer, wondering how much longer until retirement (I was in my early 20s)

So how did I come to conclude Human Resources was my dream career? Honestly, a simple likes-and-dislikes list (sometimes the simplest things can be the most effective).

But did I just waste three years studying something else and working in a completely different industry? Absolutely not – in my professional, proven opinion, no experience is wasted, and many skills are transferable. In fact, today it is those transferable skills that make you look much more appealing to hiring managers…But I digress.

Luckily, I was able to use my networks to get my first job in the Human Resources industry. I became a Human Resources Administrator/Receptionist.  I was thrilled. I was on my way to learning the ropes and building my career- one paper and one phone call at a time. I worked my way up at the small agency, and before I knew it, I was managing accounts, recruiting for senior positions, and overseeing large client portfolios in Telecommunications, IT, and Retail sectors.

I decided to expand my knowledge and enrolled in a part-time Master’s in Human Resource Management at Monash Uni. Once that was completed, I travelled and worked in Hong Kong, recruiting teachers from all around the world.  Returning to my home country, Australia, I continued my career at a startup, building a new team and culture.

Now, I am here to share my knowledge, with the help of my sister Natasha, through 1:1 Career Coaching, Resume Writing, Interview Prep Coaching and Career Change Support.

From the comfort of your own home, we can work together to build your career and help you secure a meaningful, rewarding, and fulfilling job.

Natasha

Growing up, I wanted to become a primary school teacher because I loved children and wanted to help them grow and learn. Both my parents, however, being accountants, wanted me to continue the family business. At the time, I did not want to let my parents down, so I enrolled on university and started my CPA studies. Within my first year studying accounting, I realised I loathed it. I felt trapped and knew that if I did not make a change right then, I would be stuck working at my parents’ firm, hating every minute – and that is the last thing anyone wants for their careers and lives.

After reviewing my strengths, my need to help people, and my understanding of business, I decided to pursue a degree in Human Resources and Management with a double major in Marketing. As it turned out, I absolutely loved studying Human Resources…I felt lucky to have found what I was good at so early on in my life. I soaked in everything they taught me. It felt natural to me; logical.

I was fortunate to secure a full-time role during my marketing degree, working for a large car manufacturer. I was applying my knowledge and building on my skills. Thanks to that role, I was able to find another, more senior, position in Marketing straight after I graduated; however, it was not my passion, and I soon realised I needed to find a new opportunity. I knew I had strayed away from my original HR goals.

Despite learning how job applications work and how to interview, and having been part of many job interviews before (when applying for jobs from a young age), I did not put much thought into my own job searches (rookie mistake). I applied for various jobs here and there, just wanting anything in HR. Of course, with such a hit-or-miss approach, I was not as lucky as I was when I found my calling in HR. I learnt a lot from this personal experience. By slowing down and following a proven formula, I secured a job in an HR department, built a strong relationship with the company and its management, and I will forever be grateful for the experience I had there.

Now, as a mother to four young ones, not only did I realise that being a primary school teacher would not have been right for me, but I also found myself searching for that next step in my own career; something that would fulfil my desire to help others and still allow me to be there for my children. This is why starting My Career Angels with my sister, Pauline, has been so rewarding and fulfilling.
