They’re your chance to make a strong first impression and secure that all-important next step.

Warm-up Round: Setting the Stage

The interview typically begins with general questions to help us get to know you better. These might seem simple, but they’re your chance to make a cracking first impression.

  • Tell me about yourself.” This isn’t an invitation to spill your life story. Keep it concise and professional, focusing on your career journey and a few key skills that align with the job. You do not need to go into as much detail as in a face-to-face interview, so ensure the points you discuss are the most relevant.
  • Why are you interested in this position?” Show genuine enthusiasm! Connect your skills and ambitions to the role and the company’s mission. Doing your research beforehand will impress them.
  • What are your salary expectations?” Be prepared to discuss your salary range. Research industry benchmarks and know your worth.

Show and Tell: Diving into Your Skills

Now, they’ll want to see what you’ve got. Be prepared to support your claims with concrete examples.

  • “What are your strengths?” Highlight a few key strengths relevant to the job and illustrate them with real-life examples from your work experience.
  • “What are your weaknesses?” Be honest, but choose a weakness that isn’t critical for the role. Explain how you’re working on improving it – this shows self-awareness and initiative.

Tell Us a Story: Behavioural Phone Job Interview Questions

These questions require you to share specific examples from your past to demonstrate how you handle different situations. Keep in mind that these questions may not arise during the phone call and may be reserved for the face-to-face interview. So be prepared and flexible for anything.

  • Tell me about a time you failed.” Everyone makes mistakes! The interviewer wants to see how you learn and grow from setbacks. Choose an example where you faced a challenge, took responsibility, and bounced back stronger.
  • Describe a situation where you had to work with a difficult colleague.” This tests your interpersonal skills. Emphasise how you navigated the situation professionally and achieved a positive resolution.
  • Give me an example of a time you had to handle multiple deadlines.” This shows your organisational skills. Describe how you prioritise tasks and manage your time effectively.
