Can AI really move the needle when it comes to resume writing, job searching, networking, and even career growth? Well, we are here to break it down and give you the truth, once and for all.
AI is wonderful…it has changed how we work, communicate, and entertain ourselves. It has changed how we live our lives. AI helps us eat, sleep, work out, connect, and perform our duties in the workplace; it has even replaced certain jobs. It has literally embedded itself into our everyday lives.
But the real question is: have we indeed relied too heavily on AI to do the thinking for us? Is AI advanced enough to connect with humans in a human fashion?
The other day, my husband called our local bank, and an AI system answered. He had an entire conversation with it, getting all the help he needed. At the end of the call, he said, “If you did not know it was AI, you would mistake this for a real human.” The way it spoke, connected with, and responded to my husband was less robotic and a lot more…well, natural.
On the other hand, I have seen firsthand how AI can make mistakes and provide nonsensical information. Providing misinformation, nonexistent data, and even biased information to suit the end user. This, in my opinion, is a major flaw- because, how do you know with certainty that the information you are getting is correct? I have seen AI unable to understand basic instructions, misinterpret information, and even be “lazy” in providing the full spectrum of data needed to make informed choices. The biggest concern, is that majority of us blindly believe what we are told by an AI.
So, this begs the question – how much of the information it gives can you trust?
I am here to tell you, asking ChatGPT for career, resume, or even job interview advice is as effective as asking your local Green Grocer for medical advice. Sure, they might have a few tips to share, but you are not going deeper into the essential, move-the-needle stuff. The stuff that might actually save your life. And yes, I know resume writing is not as serious as your health, but I think you get the analogy.
Here is a list of reasons why AI is not going to be your next career coach:
As a career coach, I limit the information I share online. I provide my clients with detailed, key information, but it is not publicly available.
So if AI were scanning my intellectual property to provide advice to others, there would be a limit to how much it could learn and share. This is because my coaching is personalised to individual needs, not generic situations. After all, your career and your path are not generic. Careers, as life, are never the same as anyone else’s. We are all unique; we all have our individual stories to live and tell. This is why AI cannot dig deep enough into your psyche to help.
If you are looking for quick data or a quick fact check, then AI is amazing. I personally use it to review brands, provide company information, and even make suggestions for the best holiday activities. But if you are seeking a standout resume, strong, personalised career advice and planning, detailed feedback on interview skills, and more, then a human with field experience is your better bet. It really is the same as going to a doctor for a professional opinion, rather than blindly believing ChatGPT’s medical diagnoses based on the symptoms and pictures you uploaded.
In summary, ChatGPT is fantastic – just not there yet when it comes to resume writing and career coaching.
