How to Get a Job and a Career in Melbourne and Sydney

Melbourne and Sydney, the most populated cities in Australia, offer a diverse range of career opportunities. These cities are bustling with job prospects, from established entities like NAB and Coles to the headquarters of global fast food chains like McDonalds and the thriving sectors of SaaS, Tech, Finance, and Marketing.

But with all this comes competition and struggles to get seen by any of these organisations. Job seekers are looking for employment that seems never to come. Months go by, and there is no phone call from any hiring manager or recruiter. It feels like all your job applications are invisible. Your resume might as well be a donut.

So, how do you bust into the employment scene in Melbourne and Sydney? We are here to break down some of those barriers for you.

Melbourne employment

1. You must invest time to create a strong resume. Your resume needs to highlight three main things – relevance to the job, key achievements and readability. This will ensure that you link to the role and give the hiring manager an easy and direct view on what you bring to the table without the fluff. If you do not feel confident in writing up your own resume, then reach out to us. We live and breathe resumes. Check out our services here.

2. Update your LinkedIn profile – your LinkedIn is your digital resume and your digital personal brand. Make sure that you have a clear and professional photo of yourself, post about relevant information relating to your employment industry, and ensure that all of your work experience, skills and abilities are up-to-date. It needs to be your resume on steroids.

3. Pick up that phone. This never goes out of fashion. You need to be able to connect with the hiring manager to skip that queue. Pick up that phone and jump on a call to discuss the role, your application and to clarify any information you may have about the position. It will give the hiring manager a chance to get to know you and look into your resume – it will prevent your application from getting lost in the mix.

4. Attend Networking events. Your network is your net-worth. Getting a good network will serve you for years to come.  A network is not for the short term and you need to be able to form long lasting professional relationships. Need help with that? Then reach out to us at info@mycareerangels.com.au to be the first one to get our Networking Online Course- “Build Your Confidence and Connections”. It will help you to become a networking pro in less than 2 hours.

Melbourne and Sydney are both fascinating places to live in. There is so much to see, do, and experience. However, we cannot get past the fact that we need money to see, do, and feel. This is where a job that brings an income comes in.  Of course, you may want more than a job; you may want to seek a career – this is where you need to take your career into your own hands and put in the steps you need to be the one seen and heard by hiring managers. A little hard work in the start will bring in a lot of rewards down the line.

Remember, if you need any career coaching, resume writing, or LinkedIn optimisation, then reach out to us. We are specialised and professional career coaches living in Melbourne and NSW. We have extensive experience working in large and small companies and in HR and recruitment. We know what hiring managers are looking for and can guide you in the steps you need to take to make career action happen.
