Trusting The Job Search Journey

Key Takeaways:

  • Do your research, read reviews, check reputable sources, find out what has been working for most
  • Not every step of the process will work for you, but it is the overall package, rather than one particular thing that will make it work.
  • You need to allow yourself and the process time to actually work.

Trusting the process is the hardest thing you will ever do.

It does not matter what the process is – whether it is a new diet, hair growth treatments, relationship advice, or even your career…there are processes you need to take to make things successful. Your diet will not show results in the first day, week, or heck, even month. And the more time passes, the longer you start to question “is this even working? Is this worth continuing with?”

The answer….well, yes and no. You either trust the process or you don’t. If you do not believe in its success, then don’t do it. But, if you want to see results, you know you need to give it the time it needs to get there. As they say, ‘all good things take time’.

You could be wasting time by trusting in the process itself…that is very true. But, what if you are not wasting time? What if the time you invest is going to excrete pure gold?

So how do you know what to trust?

The proof is in the pudding

People love to talk about their success, and even more so, they love to tell you about scams, horror stories and all that juicy gossip. Remember, good news travels fast…but bad news, travels faster.

Social media today is full of people running their mouths, so it may not be the place to get reputable advice, but a good google search to find trusted sources such as ScamWatch, and Trustpilot will indeed help you narrow down the true story.

Seeing real life success stories and real life reviews should give you a stronger indication of the legitimacy of the process.

So if you are told by many “cutting my calories and moving more has helped me drop 10kg” then perhaps that is not a fable, but a fact.

The same can be said for job searching “it takes time, but if you continue to update your resume, update your LinkedIn, network with hiring managers and recruiters and apply to fresh job opening, you will get phone calls and job opportunities your way”.

The Career Process

In a world where we are stressed, burned out, driven by emotions, and constantly rushing, it is hard to trust something that requires a significant amount of our time and energy.

Sure, it worked for those other people, but why would it work for you? Because you are not different, you have the same chances of success as the next person. The key, however, is to follow the process completely… no cheating.

You can walk more, cut out calories, but then sneak in a double cheeseburger and a large slice of cake on a Sunday and wonder why it is taking longer for the results to show. You need to be accountable and own up to your steps (or miss-steps) you action following the process.

Is every resume updated and tailored to the job role, or were half of them quick applies? Did you call all of the hiring managers, or you called 3 and left 2 voice messages without following up? The less energy you put into the process, the slower the results will be. So ensure that when you are following a process for success, there is constancy and energy put into it.

But at the end of the day, trusting an entirely new process, letting go and being vulnerable to a new system can be daunting, especially when the results are not obvious right away.

Here at My Career Angels, we do not, and never will, promise instant results. If a career coach out there does, know they are selling you the world, only to hand over an atlas (at best). What we do is teach you the tools to increase your chances, speed up the process and make the magic happen sooner, not later.
