It is these sunny days in Melbourne that gives me hope. The trees dancing in the wind, the sun glistening off the city river, and the fresh air filling my lungs. This gives me a positive feeling and excitement that change can and will happen. It is a sense of being able to make my goals a reality. But what goals are we talking about here? It is the goal of succeeding in my career and levelling up my skills, thinking, and myself. The ambition of reinventing myself and then doing it all over again so that I can level it up again.
Our career and personal goals will always change. The question is, “When is it enough once we get there?” The answer is, “It is never enough.”
Why? As humans, growing is a key to personal development, fulfilment and happiness. You want to be continually learning. Learning never ends. Hence, more is needed regarding your personal growth, whether it is career-based, hobby-based, as a parent, partner, friend, and so on. There is always room to grow and learn more.
As a professional career coach and resume writer, I look back at the first resume I wrote for a client and compare it to my most recent, and I shiver. Was that resume good? I am glad that my first resume was a freebie. I wonder and cannot wait to see what I think of my current resume-writing skills a year from now.
This is because I am learning, evolving, and perfecting (as best as one can perfect). With every resume, career coaching session, and industry my clients are in, whether in Marketing, Hospitality, Finance or Engineering, I learn more about it. I reflect on what I did right and what I want to change. I reflect on what I can offer that is more different and useful to my clients. I continually question, ‘How else can I help job seekers, career-focused individuals who want to find new employment opportunities, career change, or personal career development?’. I focus on what else I can give, change or do better for them.
If you do not have high career aspirations, that is perfectly acceptable. Our jobs do not measure our value—but by the people we choose to be, our internal values, and the standards we set for ourselves.
You should focus on improving, reassessing and re-defining the areas you want. Do you want to be a better artist, dancer, more health-focused, better friend…
The best part is that you can prioritise more than one area. You, as a human, can evolve in different ways, at different times, and more than once.
For me, personally, I am on a number of journeys. The first being my career. I am currently in the process of re-engineering my business, adding in new services along side my resume writing, career change coaching and interview skills training. I am introducing new projects such as podcasts, learning more about marketing, understanding my clients needs and creating online courses for support. Developing more documents to help guide and finding ways in which I can use my time to its most effective.
Beyond that, I am continually learning how to make my offerings better. How to perfect my resume writing skills, improving my knowledge sharing with my clients that will be their game changers in how they job search, or interview for that open role with the Hiring Manager.
On a personal level, I am looking at how I can up-skill my quality of life. Moving more, eating better. I can say that this is a lot harder for me than finding ways on how to write a stand our resume. I am also looking at my personal image. Am I presenting to the world the way I want to be seen?
Throughout this “quest” for self-development and growth, I can tell you there are days where I feel demotivated. Days where I see little to no progress, but like anything – it is a journey and a trip is not defined by one day. It is a collective of time that the path has been travelled. Yet, on these sunny Melbourne days, I can tell you that my excitement and motivation beams stronger. I hope you find days like this and moments that motivate you. Try and seek those moments out as often as possible to help you along.
