| 01:30 | we're your hosts natasha pauling and today we're going to be discussing |
| 01:35 | one of the obstacles when it comes to identifying what is the right career for |
| 01:42 | you that's right yes and |
| 01:46 | we thought a great way to dive right into this topic is to share a story |
| 01:51 | because we feel that a lot of you would resonate |
| 01:54 | with a lot of the ups and downs of this story and it will touch a lot of topics |
| 01:58 | that we can delve deeper into for you that's right now this story probably has |
| 02:04 | more ups and downs than most this is a good one to talk about because |
| 02:09 | it will show people that it's okay if they got a few ups and downs |
| 02:13 | but the story talks about a particular individual now |
| 02:17 | for privacy reasons we are going to change |
| 02:20 | their name and we are going to call her what are we calling her today natasha |
| 02:28 | sophia oh sophia |
| 02:31 | love it so sophia |
| 02:34 | let's let's talk about her personality she's a very extroverted very social |
| 02:40 | um a happy go lucky individual highly intelligent |
| 02:46 | she's educated but even the education side of things didn't go so smoothly she |
| 02:52 | is an entertainer by nature she loves to sing and dance |
| 02:55 | and perform and that is something that initially she wanted to do as her career |
| 03:00 | and got into a course in |
| 03:04 | music and drama i believe but realize that |
| 03:09 | look potentially this is not going to be a path that's |
| 03:13 | going to bring me |
| 03:15 | enough income to survive it's a hard one to break into i |
| 03:20 | understand so she had moved into a business course |
| 03:23 | instead this does not mean that she's put her |
| 03:27 | drama aside she does this as as a side hustle and |
| 03:33 | yeah yeah she has that fulfillment for her passion |
| 03:36 | is still there and you know and that's the thing |
| 03:39 | a lot of people don't realize is that a career is it's not all black and white |
| 03:45 | that you can have other things in your life it's not just about work and i |
| 03:49 | think absolutely don't realize that oh hang on not everything i do needs to be |
| 03:54 | about career and not everything that i do needs to |
| 03:58 | give me an income well that's right and it's |
| 04:02 | one thing that we always say is you still need your passions and if |
| 04:07 | you're able to do them as a side hobby |
| 04:11 | absolutely do them and we always say that yeah your career needs to be going |
| 04:15 | but so does your life they need a move together and if they're not and if |
| 04:20 | you're just putting all your passions back here and all the things that make |
| 04:23 | you excited like for sophia was being in theater and being actually on |
| 04:29 | stage there'll be a big gap missing |
| 04:32 | unfulfillment so keeping that going is really important well i know she jumped |
| 04:37 | around a lot she jumped around between events and administration roles |
| 04:43 | and not only did she jump around between these roles but she |
| 04:47 | jumped around cities and countries and industries as well and within industries |
| 04:53 | too that's right so |
| 04:56 | she just couldn't sit still in one place she just it was like an itch like a fire |
| 05:02 | under her and she did not feel any fulfillment with anything and i feel |
| 05:07 | that she thought oh okay i'll move cities |
| 05:10 | well i'll move countries and i'll be happy |
| 05:14 | then yeah that'll be that'll be the golden ticket that's what's going to hit |
| 05:17 | the spot that's it or i'll move industries and i'll work for this |
| 05:21 | industry no it's not the role it's just the industry yeah i'll be happy then or |
| 05:26 | i will live here it'll be an adventure i'll i'll get a lot of skills in six |
| 05:30 | months in one year and then it will give me the steps to go there |
| 05:36 | and you know sometimes though that could be right for you that could |
| 05:42 | be sometimes it is just changing industries changing locations for some |
| 05:46 | people that is the right way to go but unfortunately for sofia |
| 05:52 | it wasn't and do you know why it wasn't there was actually a really um |
| 05:58 | a good reason actually why wasn't because sophia never took the time |
| 06:04 | to sit and really think about what |
| 06:07 | what would fulfill her she never took the time to think |
| 06:10 | what do i like she was always in a rush to get something she felt that if she |
| 06:16 | wasn't working she was a failure and if she wasn't working in a certain |
| 06:20 | type of role she was a failure and she cared a lot about what others thought of |
| 06:24 | her but the thing is you're not living your |
| 06:27 | life for others you're living your life for |
| 06:30 | you and there is no timetable there's no right or wrong |
| 06:35 | we all have our own paths and we all everything comes at the right time for |
| 06:41 | you i mean let's let's look at you and me natasha i mean i am four years older |
| 06:46 | than you but you got married before me you |
| 06:49 | had kids before me yes |
| 06:52 | if you were going to go by society then technically we knew first i should |
| 06:57 | have waited my turn that's right |
| 07:00 | but i when you were getting married |
| 07:05 | at that age that you got married that was not |
| 07:10 | i that was not even an idea in my head it's not something i wanted you got |
| 07:14 | married what 25 at 25 i was traveling and i was and |
| 07:20 | that's what i wanted to do i wanted to travel and that's just everybody's |
| 07:24 | different everyone has their own stories everyone's unique and you go to figure |
| 07:28 | out what is right for you what is the path |
| 07:32 | you want what excites you and just like you said with sofia she never sat down |
| 07:36 | and really i guess analyzed herself and her wants and her needs so she |
| 07:43 | met this woman and they were talking they're talking about their careers and |
| 07:46 | she was saying how she's a pilot her husband's a pilot |
| 07:50 | pilot tell me more |
| 07:54 | you know well let's let's hear this and as she decides to |
| 07:59 | learn about the industry she realized this is it this is me because let's look |
| 08:04 | at the things that sofia likes sophia likes travel she can't sit still |
| 08:09 | but she also wants a challenge she wants to have |
| 08:15 | some sort of pride in the work that she's doing because as we said earlier |
| 08:21 | she did care what people thought about her life and where she was going and |
| 08:26 | what she was doing that's right she got a bit of pressure from her family |
| 08:31 | um but also i think just being raised with this |
| 08:35 | societal stigma about |
| 08:38 | you know where one must be in life in order to be |
| 08:43 | deemed as a success and and success is so different for |
| 08:48 | everyone and and it is a shame how society |
| 08:52 | does categorize some things but it's was really good that you know |
| 08:58 | sofia met this person and opened her eyes to a few other possibilities |
| 09:03 | well this is this is right right and the thing is |
| 09:06 | when you think about a pie that you think |
| 09:09 | this is not someone's mid-life crisis change |
| 09:12 | you think that this is something that you learn |
| 09:15 | um |
| 09:18 | it's hard studies and something you learn in your 20s now |
| 09:21 | the thing is even getting in wasn't easy getting into the course into the studies |
| 09:26 | so there was a number of tests that |
| 09:30 | you have to do that i had no idea but i'm glad that there is because i mean |
| 09:34 | you're trusting your life with something it's not easy but |
| 09:39 | the thing is the test i know i would fail i would never become a pilot no |
| 09:42 | matter how much i would love it and then a few other tests and |
| 09:47 | then the last test was a simulation exam now the thing is |
| 09:53 | according to what sophia was telling me pilots also say the same thing that the |
| 09:57 | simulation is not really true to what a it is like flying a plane so they don't |
| 10:02 | think it's a really great or fair measure because the tiniest little tap |
| 10:07 | the plank goes this way in the simulation but that's not reality it |
| 10:10 | takes a lot to move the plane to tip it to the side |
| 10:14 | she bought this simulator and practice for six |
| 10:18 | months at home so that's dedication that's when you know that this is |
| 10:21 | something that you're really really interested in doing and you have |
| 10:25 | that passion it takes so many of your boxes you're going to go that extra mile |
| 10:30 | to get there you're not going to give up and this is a hurdle that does come up a |
| 10:35 | lot though when people think oh you know what this is going in the too hard |
| 10:38 | basket i failed i can't make it i can't do it even though it sounds like the |
| 10:43 | perfect job for me they just give up but it was really |
| 10:47 | likely that sofia didn't and that she said she bought the simulator that's |
| 10:51 | right and one you know i'm sure that wasn't a cheap exercise |
| 10:55 | no it wasn't so you know and i think if you listen to |
| 10:59 | our first podcast we talk about um we're touching |
| 11:03 | a few topics briefly and obviously as we continue with this channel of ours we're |
| 11:08 | going to we'll dig deeper in each each topic and break it up but one of the |
| 11:12 | things was was those sacrifices that one needed to make |
| 11:16 | um and when i mentioned before that there was with there's a will there's a |
| 11:20 | way and the thing is that nothing is black and white |
| 11:24 | you can make things work for yourself you just got to figure out |
| 11:28 | how to do that what steps i need to take so for sofia she's still worked so she |
| 11:33 | got a job and she she signed up with a contract |
| 11:36 | that she knew was only like a short-term contract but she was able to earn an |
| 11:42 | income she had some savings and she borrowed a little bit |
| 11:47 | so she was able to do certain sacrifices make certain sacrifices |
| 11:52 | and still study and live her life in the meantime |
| 11:56 | nothing was on pause yeah yeah still |
| 12:00 | so friends still did the theater in the background as well kept her passions |
| 12:05 | going so i mean this is a woman that has a lot of energy |
| 12:10 | so she's a little bit of an energizer bunny so she's able to cramp a lot in in |
| 12:14 | a day i i remember seeing her calendar once and it was just back-to-back things |
| 12:20 | but that's how she wanted to live her life |
| 12:23 | how what she wanted to do well this does go back to personalities right so you |
| 12:28 | got to find the right roles for you to be a pilot is not easy there's a lot |
| 12:34 | there's a lot of travel a lot of energy involved a lot of |
| 12:37 | focus that needs to go into it that's it is not for everyone and that's |
| 12:42 | the thing that if sophia sat down and really took the time to analyze her |
| 12:47 | life's dislikes passions what drives her what motivates her |
| 12:52 | this whole list that we see she would be able to see |
| 12:56 | that i like to travel i like to be social i need to be stimulated i need to |
| 13:02 | use up my energy you know i need to feel |
| 13:06 | something that i'm doing is important and valued and |
| 13:10 | of course father ticks all these boxes there's other jobs as well they take |
| 13:14 | similar this boxes but pilot is one of them and |
| 13:18 | when she did go into the course and the course was intense and she had to live |
| 13:22 | on live on campus and the |
| 13:26 | the studies the |
| 13:28 | the training she had very little sleep the diet was not the best but she was |
| 13:34 | committed yeah and and that's the whole point is that |
| 13:38 | there will be hurdles there will be things that get in the way |
| 13:41 | a lot of the hurdles are you yourself |
| 13:45 | doubting yourself thinking something's too hard to do but |
| 13:50 | as sophia showed that yeah she's been many years doing lots of |
| 13:54 | different jobs thinking this will find fulfillment thinking this is what she |
| 13:58 | wanted realizing it's not moving constantly moving |
| 14:02 | and the networking she did |
| 14:06 | helped her figure out that there was even a possibility to be a pilot and |
| 14:11 | that is like what colin was saying earlier about personality and knowing |
| 14:15 | what other jobs are out there and that is difficult for some people to think oh |
| 14:19 | accountant lawyer doctor you know the basics |
| 14:22 | to broaden your horizons and think outside of the box of what else is out |
| 14:26 | there when she did that the commitment that |
| 14:30 | went into it for here this is a |
| 14:33 | a big part of it in this particular story is the commitment and the not |
| 14:37 | giving up the dedication and the sacrifices as you said earlier you said |
| 14:43 | you know sometimes we need to sacrifice some things and for her it was |
| 14:47 | her free time she had sacrificed the whole time she was living on campus |
| 14:52 | the whole time she her friends family no she was she had to move to another state |
| 14:58 | and stay there and eat leave breathe |
| 15:03 | the qantas course |
| 15:07 | but what drove her was the the end goal the bigger picture and the |
| 15:12 | fact that well this situation is not forever |
| 15:16 | this situation is temporary and this situation is not a reflection |
| 15:20 | on the job it's these steps that i need to take to |
| 15:25 | get to the career that i want to be in this is not the career this is the |
| 15:30 | journey towards it she didn't just listen to what she was |
| 15:35 | told by the teachers but she wanted to improve her chances of passing so she |
| 15:40 | did source out mentors she did reach out to other people and that's the thing is |
| 15:45 | that you are in control of your own learning |
| 15:50 | journey you know your growth and development |
| 15:53 | and a lot of us are stuck in these i feel |
| 15:57 | like it's constantly this black and white thinking this you know i'm going |
| 16:00 | to go here and i'm going to learn this the next job i'm going to learn that and |
| 16:03 | that but you can skip certain steps as well in your career |
| 16:08 | by getting these mentors taking up some |
| 16:12 | extra courses doing reading whatever it is getting practice somewhere else on |
| 16:17 | the side you can skip ahead now she didn't do |
| 16:21 | that and i think someone told her to do that she actively sought out these |
| 16:25 | older um more skilled pilots for those extra |
| 16:30 | tips and tricks and how do i do this and what do i do where what am i doing wrong |
| 16:35 | and how do i fix it to get to that next level so |
| 16:40 | you don't have to do this if you're not interested in in growing your career to |
| 16:44 | a certain degree like some people very happy and content to be |
| 16:48 | a certain level but if you do have this ambition and you want to skip ahead you |
| 16:52 | can you can jump a few steps |
| 16:56 | you know yeah you can definitely do that and i mean i know people that |
| 17:00 | we both know some people that are happy where they are and they actually don't |
| 17:03 | want to ever manage a team they don't ever want to progress up they're just |
| 17:06 | really happy getting in doing their work they like their work it's not that |
| 17:10 | they're like oh i can you know switch off no |
| 17:13 | they actually enjoy their work and they're happy in their position that's |
| 17:16 | all they want to do and they rather do bigger things outside of work that's |
| 17:20 | great you know yourself that well you know what is fun for you do that but |
| 17:26 | then there are others that do want to progress further and i know some |
| 17:29 | personally where they do exactly what you just said where |
| 17:33 | they find those mentors and they ask them for a coffee i've been |
| 17:37 | following you can we catch up i just want to pick your brain a little bit and |
| 17:41 | usually those people are happy to do that |
| 17:44 | because personally it's a bit of an ego boost they're happy that somebody has |
| 17:49 | been watching them and wants to pick their brain especially |
| 17:53 | if you have a connection to them so like oh you know i'm friends with with mark |
| 17:58 | and he's told me to reach out to you then then |
| 18:01 | they're also more willing to have a chat because they don't want to let mark down |
| 18:04 | and see what they do like what does a day in |
| 18:07 | the life look like what what time do you wake up |
| 18:10 | and if it's say you know a big someone that owns multiple businesses |
| 18:15 | they may say you know i wake up at 5 00 a.m |
| 18:18 | and i read the paper and or i read a chapter of a book and it could be i only |
| 18:24 | have a coffee later or i don't have coffee and just see obviously not |
| 18:27 | everything's going to align with you you know if someone said to me don't have |
| 18:30 | coffee i'd be like okay i'll talk to you later |
| 18:33 | you know that's not exactly my thing but you pick what fits your lifestyle and |
| 18:39 | thought fits you and learn from them see what they do and try to build those |
| 18:45 | habits because it's those habits and that commitment to those habits that |
| 18:51 | rewire your brain you know you start creating |
| 18:54 | different neural pathways and create new positive habits |
| 19:00 | to keep you on track in your career journey whatever that may be |
| 19:05 | and it's the same for life you know doing those things that you |
| 19:09 | enjoy outside of your career as well which is what we said earlier about |
| 19:13 | keeping those passions going what is it that i can do |
| 19:17 | that fits into my work life and family life that ticks my boxes so it could be |
| 19:23 | that you may have so many passions like oh i want to go rock climbing i want to |
| 19:27 | be jet skiing i want to do a triathlon i also want to learn how to i know skydive |
| 19:32 | it's like okay maybe you can't do all of them at once some people go a little bit |
| 19:36 | crazy and book this in and book that in but then you're letting something else |
| 19:40 | drop so you need to find a good balance and a good path |
| 19:46 | that you can actually follow but i think it's important to note that |
| 19:50 | there's no such thing as a 50 50 it's an equal balance you're never going to find |
| 19:56 | that there's always something that has to give |
| 19:58 | if you're going to start committing more energy into your career then family and |
| 20:02 | friends are gonna waddle off or you're healthy fitness my waddle off vice versa |
| 20:08 | with all of it so of course you need to prioritize what |
| 20:12 | is the most important to you and put that energy in there |
| 20:16 | so and when it comes to changing habits |
| 20:19 | it's not easy i think it's really easy for you and me to sit there like you |
| 20:23 | just got to find a mentor and change those habits no problems |
| 20:28 | that's why i think there's a book called atomic habits it's a really great one um |
| 20:32 | to read but what it talks about is how the really smallest changes can make the |
| 20:36 | biggest impacts and that's that's it you don't need to |
| 20:40 | do too much too quickly small steps will actually get you there because you |
| 20:47 | are not going to give up you it's manageable you can handle it you're not |
| 20:52 | going to get burnt out you're not going to |
| 20:55 | fail at least not fail easily when you're doing these small |
| 21:01 | changes to your life and it could just be about |
| 21:05 | reading something for 15 minutes a day so i absolutely agree and this is what |
| 21:09 | we do even in our um goal setting coaching sessions we have a big goal and |
| 21:16 | then we have little goals to achieve that big goal but then in |
| 21:21 | each little goal we have steps with a little tick box and once you take |
| 21:26 | off one step you're still far from the big goal |
| 21:31 | but it's just like you said that the little ticks little achievements every |
| 21:36 | day really |
| 21:38 | make a huge impact and moving forward you can move |
| 21:43 | yeah it's also the the positive you know that giddy feeling that you feel inside |
| 21:48 | when you have the a child you know if you brush your teeth |
| 21:53 | you get to go you know 10 minutes on my phone not that's a great reward to give |
| 21:57 | but as an example it's that reward that you get and for |
| 22:02 | yourself it's that reward of accomplishment and being proud of |
| 22:07 | yourself that you did it and that will help make those changes in |
| 22:12 | their habits and that will then help you keep moving forward |
| 22:17 | but first you need to figure out where |
| 22:19 | you're moving forward too well i guess just to sum up today's |
| 22:24 | session it's okay if you don't know what it is you want to be doing and it's okay |
| 22:28 | if you feel that what you're doing now is the wrong path for you |
| 22:33 | that's it's never too late to make a change and that's all you need to do is |
| 22:38 | give yourself the time and respect of learning and discovering who you are |
| 22:45 | and it's not something that you can do in one night you do need the time |
| 22:49 | to reflect on that and the thing is the more |
| 22:52 | as you go about doing it more ideas will come into your mind you're like oh |
| 22:57 | actually i like this as well really |
| 23:00 | dig deep like you got to have this um you know emotional connection with |
| 23:06 | yourself that can take time and once you've |
| 23:10 | unlocked all of that then |
| 23:13 | sort of step back and say well is there a story that's emerging from here and |
| 23:17 | then start researching the different roles that you feel that align with you |
| 23:22 | your values your likes your passions your skills |
| 23:27 | and then understand that position bit better see |
| 23:32 | yeah it resonates and i think you'll know |
| 23:35 | when you suck in this butterflies like i think you know then you can start |
| 23:38 | looking at what's needed what do i need what's the gaps how can i |
| 23:44 | get there and take your time there's no time frame when this needs to be done |
| 23:49 | again if you are committed and serious about making that change then |
| 23:55 | don't turn your back on it either do it as a |
| 23:59 | personal exercise for your personal self growth and development at the very least |
| 24:03 | correct absolutely it's you'll only thank yourself at the end of |
| 24:08 | it and if you do struggle you know there |
| 24:11 | are tools and and people that can help you get back on path |
| 24:15 | but if you can just take that time and do that it could be very exciting what |
| 24:20 | unravels from there hmm absolutely |
| 24:25 | this is what i did to fun my |
| 24:28 | korean hr literally this |
| 24:32 | this method and this is the method that we've helped |
| 24:35 | many of our clients find their career paths too |
| 24:39 | yeah i mean we set out the questions for them but |
| 24:42 | the main ones that for you to start off with is what we said before your likes |
| 24:48 | and dislikes of everything of everything work |
| 24:54 | the people around you everything what drives you as a human um which is |
| 25:00 | what do you value what's important to you it could be even your what what |
| 25:06 | makes you who you are how you grew up the stories that you have from your |
| 25:10 | childhood that you this happened in the past that was interesting maybe that's a |
| 25:16 | path i want to go down or you met someone when you were a kid and doing |
| 25:20 | this process starts bringing up old memories and stories and can really open |
| 25:27 | that up for you and makes you realize everything that's |
| 25:31 | happened has made you who you are today and where you're going and if you're not |
| 25:35 | happy with where you're going if you know what now that i'm looking at this |
| 25:39 | list i'm not happy with who i am today you can start implementing changes and |
| 25:45 | if you are happy it's like well you're happy to stay where you are today or do |
| 25:50 | you want to move forward or sideways or maybe backwards |
| 25:54 | you never know let's see and just so you know |
| 25:58 | final point there is no right or role on that list |
| 26:02 | if you value something then you value it |
| 26:06 | if this is important to you then it's important to you |
| 26:10 | it doesn't matter if it's not important to someone else or someone says really |
| 26:16 | that's that's what you value no we don't share this list with anyone |
| 26:21 | this is between you and you yeah absolutely don't listen to others |
| 26:25 | just that's when things get really messy when |
| 26:28 | you start listening to too many people especially when |
| 26:33 | they maybe don't know you well enough or they don't |
| 26:35 | know about about careers or life or anything they |
| 26:40 | don't know you so you do you like i've said in the very |
| 26:44 | beginning of this is that you're living for you not for others and |
| 26:49 | the thing is when people are giving you advice there's usually a biases behind |
| 26:53 | it either don't want to see you succeed or have fear for you |
| 26:59 | and worried for you to make these changes or have their own |
| 27:03 | perceptions and predispositions to things and and they're putting it on |
| 27:07 | onto you that's them that's not you only you know |
| 27:11 | what is right and best for you that's right |
| 27:14 | so hopefully in this episode today you guys have |
| 27:18 | figured out some ways to see how or if you need to reshape your career and some |
| 27:25 | tools that you can use to do that so the delving deep into who you are |
| 27:32 | pros and cons likes dislikes figuring out |
| 27:36 | what gives you those little butterflies and networking talk to people see what |
| 27:41 | they do actually be curious about what do you do |
| 27:45 | what does that mean what does a day in the life look like if you want to |
| 27:49 | progress further find a mentor if you're not sure how to find a mentor |
