Discussion Overview

Just like packing away holiday decorations gives your home a reset, the start of the year is a great moment to clear out career clutter—like outdated goals, limiting beliefs, or unfulfilling roles—and realign with what truly matters.
You can’t set meaningful goals without first understanding your strengths. The episode encourages listeners to list their skills and abilities, take a resume refresh or skills assessment, and identify natural talents versus learned skills.
Start by asking yourself: What truly motivates me? What kind of work environment makes me thrive? Visualizing your ideal workday can help uncover hidden needs—or confirm that you’re already where you need to be.
Setting goals like “find a better job” rarely sticks. SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) bring clarity and structure. For example: “Complete a leadership certificate by April 21st and apply for three team lead roles.”
By turning a big goal into smaller goals, and each smaller goal into specific action steps, you create a clear roadmap. Think: “To become a leader → earn a certificate → research programs → apply → enroll.” Each checked-off step builds momentum.
Set reminders, use planners, and check your progress monthly. The episode suggests using their downloadable Career Planner and visualizing success to stay motivated. Regular reflection and flexibility are key—adjust goals as needed, but don’t give up on them.

00:15 for landing your dream job think of it as your free Master Class packed with
00:18 all the tips advice and strategies you need to take your career to the next
00:23 level you know that feeling when you're putting away all the decorations you've
00:27 taken down the tree and everything looks like a clean slate and you start to
00:31 think oh Now's the Time to declutter the house well it doesn't just have to be
00:35 about decluttering the house now is a great time to declutter your career too
00:40 to clean it up and make sure it's heading down the right path some people
00:44 see the new year as just a roll on days weeks months nothing special but others
00:50 see the new year as a clean slate time to start fresh or try something new and
00:55 we all make resolutions and and Promises to ourselves well today we're ditching
01:00 the resolutions because that's face it traditional New Year's resolutions
01:04 really work and we're diving into accountable steps to start the year
01:10 strong in your career this year instead of setting vague goals like just find a
01:14 new job we're going deeper we're starting with the why not just the what
01:20 so think about it what truly motivates you and why what are your core values
01:26 how did they become your core values why are they your core values dig deep and
01:31 really think about that that gives you an idea of what you want in your
01:35 workplace what you want in your career now what kind of work makes you feel
01:40 enthusiastic and and fulfilled and fooled with and filled with passion if
01:45 you're feeling stuck and you need some inso head over to our resources page on
01:50 our website I've got lots of blogs on there that you can have a read and have
01:53 lots of ideas on what else is out there and other ways to self-analyze and dig
01:58 deep and they will give you some other ideas on your careers that you can think
02:02 about so anyway now that you've thought about what motivates you what your core
02:06 values are what's next it's time for self assessment what are you truly good
02:11 at dust off that resume or maybe even take a skills assessment test the
02:15 clarity you'll get from self analysis is the key thing that you need to set the
02:21 right goals for you we ask all of our clients uh to write a list of skills and
02:26 abilities this is part of their self assessment self analysis process the
02:30 difference between a skill and an ability is a skill is something that you
02:34 hone in on over time that you excel at an ability is something that is a to you
02:38 something that you were born with the example I love to give for this CU it's
02:43 easy to Envision it is Imagine uh your toddler and you've given them a puzzle
02:49 box and you look at one toddler and they're fitting the square shape into
02:54 the square hole the circle shape into the circle hole natural problem solvers
02:58 then you look over at the toddler and they're trying to smash that circle
03:02 shape into that square shape and it's just not going in not a natural Problem
03:06 solver and you don't have to write down all your skills and abilities into
03:10 separate columns you don't need to do that if you don't want to you can just
03:13 write the whole list down and again the things that you want to improve on
03:17 because that's important to know as well whatever you want to improve on you can
03:21 turn into a skill but the reason we do suggest it into those two separate
03:25 columns is that way you can really see what you've exceled out throughout your
03:30 life that you've actually turned into a strong transferable skill so now close
03:35 your eyes for a moment are they closed picture your ideal work day what does
03:40 your environment look like who's there are you collaborating with a team or is
03:46 it just one other person are you thriving in Independence is it fast
03:50 place and dynamic or calm and methodical this Vision can help guide you towards
03:56 the right career path it can help you see something that you need or could be
04:02 lacking now or maybe you're envisioning exactly the environment you're in and
04:05 there you go you're done you're perfect no problems but if you see some things
04:09 that come and structured well maybe sales isn't the right role for you so
04:14 dig deep and think clearly because that vision will guide you towards a lot of
04:19 other options of where you can be and it could be something completely different
04:23 to what you are now which could be scary thinking oh my gosh I need to change
04:27 everything it might not be that it could could just be changing the environment
04:31 but the job's still the same it's could be about finding the right company but
04:35 take note of it all it's a self-analysis it's important so now let's talk about
04:40 goals but not just any goals we're talking about smart goals SM SM a r t
04:45 specific measurable achievable relevant and time bound so for example instead of
04:52 saying I want to improve my leadership skills you have to change that into a
04:56 smart goal so needs to tick those five words so you can change that to say
05:03 by April 21st I will complete a leadership certificate and apply for
05:10 three lead team positions can you see the difference there you've made them
05:15 time bound you made them relevant to what you want measurable achievable
05:19 because you've given yourself months to complete a certificate now if the
05:23 certificate's longer easy change the time frame yes it is good to have a time
05:28 frame set to your goal but life happens this is where people
05:32 get really hard on themselves and they say I said that I was going to achieve
05:37 this by April 21st but I'm still doing the course fine it happens push back the
05:42 goal I'm not saying push it back by a year or two but it needs to be realistic
05:46 achievable remember that okay so life happens you need to flow with it but do
05:53 try to maintain that end goal in a realistic time frame and big goals can
06:00 be overwhelming so break it down into smaller manageable goals and steps what
06:06 do I mean by this so you've got to write down first your big goal whatever that
06:10 is and then think of the things that you need to do to achieve that goal those
06:15 are your little goals and each of those little goals what steps you need to take
06:21 to actually get there to achieve the smaller goals so it could be you want to
06:27 enroll you want to become a leader to be become a leader you first need a smaller
06:32 goal of completing a leadership certificate what do you need to do to
06:36 complete the leadership certificate the steps are to search for different
06:41 certifications to apply to those certifications to make sure that you
06:45 qualify to the certifications so those are the steps the smaller goal is
06:50 getting the certificate and the Big Goal is becoming a leader so now that you've
06:54 drilled down highlighted step by step don't forget the accountability find a
06:59 career set reminders in your phone use the planner to track your progress and
07:04 you can actually download a free guide from our website from our resources page
07:10 it's called My Career planner and it outlines exactly in there how to write
07:15 the goals how to make them smaller and how to do step by steps with time frames
07:19 and everything oh and one more thing visualize yourself achieving those goals
07:24 feel the sense of accomplishment honestly it makes a huge difference you
07:27 can Envision it you see yourself there and you feel that achievement it really
07:33 helps and also by making it step by step whenever you tick off I've done that
07:39 step it's tiny it could just be that research of a course but you did it
07:43 you're that little bit closer to your big goal tick off each step it really
07:48 makes a difference it really motivates you to go further so as you move forward
07:53 remember to check in with yourself regularly throughout 2025 maybe once a
07:58 month aside time to review your progress and adjust your goals if needed as I
08:04 said it is okay to adjust the goals career Parks aren't always a straight
08:10 line actually they're very rarely a straight line so embrace the detours and
08:15 be open to new opportunities as long as they make sense and in line with your
08:20 goals for the long term it could be that something comes your way and it makes
08:25 you take a side step but you can see that that side step is still going to
08:30 help you achieve your goal it could be if we go back to the leadership thing it
08:35 could be that another course comes up it's not a straight and cut leadership
08:40 program but it actually opens the doorway to something else it just might
08:44 be the perfect thing for you to do so be open to those opportunities you never
08:48 know where one thing can take you and remember you don't have to do this alone
08:53 connect with me for career coaching or explore the resources on our website
08:57 we've got tons of helpful artic I Les and guides speak to a friend nothing has
09:02 to be done alone so that's it for this week's episode I hope you're feeling
