Discussion Overview

According to the World Economic Forum, 50% of employees will need to update their skills by 2025. This isn’t just a suggestion—it’s a reality check. As the job market evolves rapidly, staying competitive means continuously learning and growing. Upskilling is no longer optional; it’s essential for career security and opportunity.
AI is becoming a major part of both our professional and personal lives. Learning how to use tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Notion—even casually—can boost your productivity and confidence. The goal isn’t to become an expert overnight, but to start building tech fluency before it becomes a necessity.
Skill-based hiring is when employers focus on what you can do rather than only on your degree or job title. This trend values transferable skills—like adaptability, communication, and problem-solving—which opens doors to people with diverse experiences and backgrounds.
The top three growing industries for 2025 include:
- Technology
- Healthcare
- Renewable energy
Meanwhile, industries like retail and traditional manufacturing continue to decline, with many roles being automated or phased out. Staying updated on these trends can help you plan smart career moves.
Career adaptability starts with being proactive. Reskilling through online platforms, training programs, or even free resources like Jobs & Skills Australia and Seek.com.au helps you pivot smoothly into emerging roles. Planning now means you won’t be caught off guard if your current role becomes obsolete.
A strong LinkedIn presence can open doors to jobs you didn’t even apply for. Update your skills section, share industry insights, and network with seasoned professionals. Visibility increases your chances of being noticed and recruited.

00:32 of employees will need to update their skills by 2025.
00:38 yeah you heard that right 50 of individuals would need to have
00:42 updated their skills yesterday
00:46 hi my name is pauline and i am one of the career coaches from my career angels
00:52 and this is our channel career reshape so welcome
00:56 look today i would like to talk to you about
01:00 the australian job market now yes i did
01:03 mention that 50 of individuals need to
01:09 look at updating those skills don't worry this is a huge opportunity and
01:13 just because you haven't updated those skills yet doesn't mean that you can't
01:17 start doing that today and take advantage of the changes that are
01:23 happening around us so
01:26 whether you are an experienced pro or just starting out you need to know the
01:31 game changing strategies that could make or break your career in
01:36 2025 but
01:39 stick with me i will talk you through in how you can
01:44 make it first things first a i
01:49 i highly recommend that you start and make a tech study plan so
01:56 why what does this all mean so experts are saying that it is really important
02:02 that you start to practice using ai technologies
02:06 now even if you don't need it even if it's not necessary in your day-to-day
02:10 life or part of your work becoming familiar with it today will help you
02:16 tomorrow because eventually i will start taking over everything it will be either
02:22 a full on takeover or a massive
02:26 integration with your life and your career
02:30 so by becoming familiar with it now will allow you to thrive later and you won't
02:36 be overwhelmed so create maybe an hour
02:40 a week to play around with the technology
02:45 get into it because there's no secret tech is driving the future my whole
02:49 premise is about staying competitive and one step ahead if you want to go with
02:55 the status quo you absolutely can but a i
03:00 is a big disrupter for better and for worse and you can
03:05 utilize this technology to your advantage you
03:09 can help it make a plan for your life you can help
03:13 you stay organized it can help you write emails and sound a little bit more
03:17 sophisticated but if you're not careful and updating your skills and
03:24 finding ways to use a i
03:28 that it needs you to operate it it could take over your entire job and that
03:35 that's something we don't want so what kind of tools do i recommend that you
03:40 start practicing with i will start with apps like chat chippy teen gemini
03:43 they're super interactive and you canreally play around with how
03:48 it can benefit your day-to-day life so by making a plan by answering questions
03:52 by even booking things for you such as your
03:57 next week's dinner reservations also applications such as notion are
04:02 fantastic and so you can start using it at work to plan and schedule your
04:07 working week you know they're saying if you can't beat them join them so don't
04:11 fear ai and it's hostile takeover but think
04:16 about how it can integrate into your life where you are in control of it
04:23 before we get into the nitty-gritty of this topic we just wanted to check in
04:26 and say that if you believe that you need some assistance and that we could
04:31 help you reach out to us today check out our website join our newsletter we'd
04:35 love to be in touch we wanted to quickly mention that subscribing to the podcast
04:40 is the best way to support the show and ensure you never miss an episode it's
04:46 super easy just click the subscribe button whenever you're listening thanks
04:51 for tuning in now let's talk about the big one the job market trends
04:58 because they are always changing it's a trend for a reason a trend is something
05:04 that comes and goes like fast fashion so you need to stay on top of it
05:10 there are multiple ways in doing so one is by following
05:14 individuals such as myself who like to talk about the employment trends
05:19 and keep people updated on it you can read publications
05:24 and read articles that are discussing what
05:28 is happening in the employment market but another really smart move that you
05:34 can make is by networking
05:38 so like i mentioned before according to the world economic forum most people
05:43 will potentially lose their jobs because of
05:47 skills skill based hiring is going to be a hot thing this year and moving forward
05:53 because organizations now are understanding and seeing the value in
05:57 skills this is not to undermine experience or
06:00 qualifications those two are also really important but skills and those
06:06 transferable skills are now considered something of value and this
06:11 is a really good thing because this allows you to show what else you
06:17 can bring to the table that is unique to you those special skills that you have
06:22 perfected over time so this will allow for a more competitive employment market
06:29 but it also will give you the opportunity to
06:34 really sell yourself and can allow you to
06:38 shift between roles and industries so if you
06:43 will find and see that your particular role
06:48 is becoming redundant is no longer
06:52 required because perhaps ai is taking over then you can look at how you can
06:58 shift yourself within the industry or look at new
07:04 exciting opportunities and that you are no longer limited
07:08 by your qualifications
07:12 but your skills which are transferable have a
07:16 stronger playing field so yes like i said
07:20 a lot of jobs are going to start to
07:24 drop down and we're going to start to see less opportunities in certain
07:30 industries and certain industries are going to
07:34 soar while others are going to have this significant downsizing so what are the
07:39 hot industries well there are quite a few but let's just mention say the top
07:44 three which will be technology health care and even renewable energy
07:48 the other industries that are going down is pretty much the same ones that have
07:52 been going down for a while and they'll continue to go down which is retail and
07:56 even traditional manufacturing will see job cuts so like i said what can you do
08:02 to answer that question is to stay on top of the trend you want to know what
08:06 is happening so you can make the right steps the plans now and not be
08:10 blindsided when your role is suddenly not available
08:16 so you need to be adaptable a lot of us don't like change and i i get that i'm
08:22 not a big fan of change either but this world is changing really really quickly
08:28 and you have no choice but to be flexible and adaptable but this does not
08:34 mean that the shift has to be great if you love what you do then you can find
08:39 alternative similar roles and scale up and across to those
08:46 positions to have a lot more job security
08:50 so do keep your eyes open for those growth opportunities and also those
08:55 shrinking sectors because you do want to be one step ahead my advice is to
09:00 consider risk skilling early to be able to pivot in your career path so if you
09:06 can foresee where your industry is going then start risk feeling today take your
09:11 time with it so by the time that your role is no longer really an opportunity
09:18 for you you can just move across so the jobs and
09:22 skills australia website is a great place to start it offers a valuable
09:28 insight into the job market trends and the future skills that are in demand so
09:32 you know exactly what and where and the gaps that you
09:36 have to reskill safe.com dot you
09:41 is also surprisingly a great
09:44 resource to browse job opportunities but also to learn about the skills of the
09:50 various employers are looking for within that
09:53 industry so it's really useful information and they give it to you in a
09:58 really easy snapshot but there's one more
10:03 card to play and is this is also quite essential it's
10:08 about your personal branding so you need to improve your linkedin i
10:14 guarantee a lot of people right now have a very
10:18 subpar linkedin account if one at all the most powerful tool any one of us can
10:25 have is our personal career
10:30 brand it is your career arsenal this will allow you to establish strong
10:37 networking opportunities and i've said this before but your network is your net
10:43 worth so yeah it's it's what you know but
10:47 more so who you know and by having a strong personal
10:51 brand on linkedin will allow you to connect with the right people because
10:56 you are presenting yourself as a professional
10:59 so update your skill section your experience section make it your resume
11:05 on steroids start posting blogs and articles and your opinions
11:10 to show your expertise in the industry and the area that you are working in or
11:16 want to work in and start connecting with people in the industry especially
11:21 those who are seasoned who have been in the industry for a while because they
11:26 know the changes that has been and they can foresee the changes that are coming
11:30 they can even be your mentor your guide to the future and what hiring managers
11:36 are looking for in that particular
11:40 industry or role the more visible you are the more opportunities will come
11:45 your way i can tell you now a lot of my clients have received opportunities to
11:51 interview because they've been headhunted through linkedin
11:55 much more so than just a cold application so to sum it all up for 2025
12:02 this is the year of opportunity for those who are ready to adapt
12:07 the job market is evolving with new technologies shifting economies and the
12:13 need for that personal branding more than ever before
12:18 so by staying informed embracing the change and re-skilling
12:22 you will not only survive you will thrive thanks for watching and
12:28 be sure to subscribe to career reshaped so you can
